Recovery That Starts at Home
At Physio On The Green, we understand that recovery isn’t one-size-fits-all. For many, the best place to rebuild strength and confidence is at home – surrounded by comfort and familiarity.
Tim, an 88-year-old patient, discovered how personalised, home-based physiotherapy could restore both his mobility and his sense of independence after major surgery.
A New Chapter After Surgery
Until July 2023, Tim enjoyed good health. Then came major bowel surgery, followed by two months in hospital and the addition of a permanent stoma bag. When he finally returned home, he found himself largely house-bound.
“I have an NHS bed, a riser/recliner chair, and I move about downstairs using a walker, stick, or rollator,” he explained.
Despite the challenges, Tim remained determined to recover. “I had no concerns about starting physiotherapy. I was very keen to get help and advice,” he said. That positive attitude became the foundation for his journey forward.
Tailored Care That Fits His Life
Tim began working with Daisy, one of our experienced physiotherapists, who designed a programme built entirely around his abilities and goals.
“I’m taught a wide range of movements and exercises to practise on my own,” Tim said. “I have a daily check sheet that keeps me focused, and every week or fortnight we review and add new exercises.”
This structured and evolving plan helped him stay consistent, even during difficult periods. “When I’ve been ill and lost strength, we just go back a bit and rebuild. My experience has been very positive.”
Why Home-Based Physiotherapy Works
For Tim, recovering at home has made all the difference. “Home is an excellent environment for this work,” he said. “The background stays the same, which makes it easier to focus on progress.”
All exercises are tailored to his physical state, gradually increasing in difficulty as he improves. “As I get stronger, the exercises become more challenging, and targets are set to help me move forward.”
But the benefits go beyond the physical. “I look forward to Daisy’s visits – they give me encouragement, purpose, and direction. She helps me be realistic about my abilities and adjust my lifestyle, especially with my breathing issues.”
Overcoming Setbacks Safely
Like most recovery journeys, Tim’s hasn’t been linear. “Progress has been erratic,” he said. “There was a time when I was ahead of where I am now, but I’m not discouraged.”
Safety remains central to every session. “Old people do fall down a lot,” he noted. “I’m continually reminded to use my stick properly, watch my feet, and not take risks moving from A to B.”
Real Results and Renewed Confidence
Tim is proud of how far he’s come. “All the activities and exercises are tuned to my condition. My biggest issue is breathing, but Daisy finds ways to challenge me safely – even climbing stairs,” he said.
His steady mindset has played a big part in his progress. “I’m a pretty relaxed and cool customer,” he added with a smile. “I’d certainly recommend home-based physiotherapy to others in my situation.”
